The textile industry uses a raft of chemicals, such as hormone disrupters and potential carcinogens. The production of clothing has a huge impact on the environment. The raw materials and chemically are bad for the nature and also our health. Blond & Bieber have found a new way to print.

What is it?
Algaemy is a design laboratory that researching the possibilities of micro-algae as a pigment. The color palette consists of various shades of green, blue, brown, orange and red. Essi Johanna Glomb and Rasa Weber are the two creative brains behind the brand Blond & Bieber, a design studio based in Berlin. They invent a method to dye clothes and shoes with algae. They call it living colours because a green might fade to a bleu, for example. Micro algae don’t only have applications on the fashion industry but also on food, energy, oil, filtering and CO-2 uptake. They designed a machine that allows them to grow the algae, and finally printing the colours with a huge printing press on the fabrics. They have collaborated with fashion designer Ylenia Gortana and German shoe company Trippen for this collection:

Why is it cool?
The clothing industry is responsible for a large amount of environmental pollution, in the future this will also have consequences on the health of our cities. The paint residues chemicals end up in the clean drinking water of developing countries, where production often takes place. This could mean areas have a deficiency of drinking water and the surrounding areas are no longer liveable.

What could this new method of dying mean for the future?
I think, this way of painting have a big potential in the fashion industry because they waist a lot of chemicals, water, energy and agricultural land at this moment. Because of the size of this industry is the impact even greater. * It produces every year sixty thousand billion kilograms of textiles, for the dyeing of 1 kilogram an average of 150 gallon of water are needed. This means that the textile industry annually 3.2% of all of the available water neglects. Painting with algae only use natural materials, it also consumes less water. I see this signal not only develop in the textile industry, but it also has opportunities for interior, food and art. Cities will be healthier in the future and become more aware of the damage.
